Women dominate the Berlin Film Festival, Alcarràs wins the Golden Bear

The Catalan-speaking drama Alcarràs won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival because the main prices of women were dominated. Two of the three best film prices went to films by directors, the two gender -neutral actual acting prices and the prize for the best direction went to women.

Alcarràs directed by Carla Simón won the main prize of the festival: a drama that plays in the Catalan landscape and pursues the difficulties of a farmer family after its landowner decides to replace their peach trees with solar collectors. It is Simon's second feature after the well -recorded Summer 1993, which was published in 2017.

The third prize of the jury went to the celebrated Mexican drama Robe of Gems, a feature film debut by director Natalia López Gallardo, who had previously worked as a cutter on Carlos Reygadas' Silent Light and Post Tenebras Lux. She separated the South Korean director Hong Sang-Soo, whose film The Novelist’s won the Grand Jury.

Berlin introduced gender-neutral acting prices in 2021 and both went to women as before. The best leading role won Meltem Kapan for her portrayal of a mother who takes up with the US judiciary to leave her son in Rabiye Kurnaz against George W. Bush from Guantánamo Bay, while the best supporting role Laura Basuuki for her role in an Indonesian drama went.
