Baden -Württemberg - pioneer in sustainable nutrition

Sustainable nutrition in focus: Baden-Württemberger value regional and seasonal foods

People in Baden-Württemberg show the greatest interest in regional, seasonal or biologically produced foods across Germany. This goes from the study "How (sustainably) eats Baden-Württemberg?" the technician health insurance company. The survey results underline the importance of taste, health and sustainability in the diet of Baden-Württemberg.

According to the survey, 61 percent of those surveyed stated that it is important to them or very important to buy organic products, on the national average it was only 46 percent. Minister of nutrition, rural areas and consumer protection, Peter Hauk, described Baden-Württemberg as a pioneer for a more sustainable nutrition and emphasized that this was also a success of the country's nutritional strategy.

The demand for organic products influences both private food shopping and outdoor catering. However, regional organic products are still too rarely on the menu in community catering facilities. Minister Hauk announced that further measures for more regional organic should be implemented in the community catering from next year.

Furthermore, Hauk emphasized that in addition to organic products, 87 percent of the Baden-Württembergers and Baden-Württemberg consider seasonal food to be important or very important. This attitude strengthens home and agriculture in the country.

Despite the high interest in sustainable nutrition, meat remains a popular part of the people's nutrition. However, Hauk described the purchase of regional meat as important for sustainability and climate protection.

The results of the study reflect the importance of sustainable nutrition in Baden-Württemberg and show that consumers in the country have a strong awareness of regional, seasonal and biological food. It remains to be seen how the political measures to promote more sustainable nutrition will influence shopping behavior and offers in community catering in the future.
