Five dead sheep discovered in Todtnau: Investigations should clarify Wolf as a perpetrator

In the municipality of Todtnau in the Lörrach district, five dead sheep were found on August 20, 2023. The site of this unusual discovery lies in the area of responsibility of the forestry and research institution (FVA) Freiburg. FVA experts were on site to document the situation. In addition, genetic samples were taken, which are now being further investigated in the Senckenberg Center for Wildlife Genetics.

At the moment, it can neither be excluded nor confirmed whether a wolf is responsible for the death of the animals. It remains to be seen what the genetic examinations will result.

The municipality of Todtnau is located in the WOLFSPRASIEN Black Forest. This means that measures are increasingly taken to protect farm animals from attacks by wolves. Both the farm animal associations and the region's wildlife officers were informed about the incident.

If someone in the Todtnau region has made suspicious observations that could indicate a wolf, asked to report this immediately to the FVA in Freiburg. The email address info@wildtierenmonitoring.de can be used for this.

The wolf is an issue in Baden-Württemberg that meets both interest and controversy. The Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy Management in Baden-Württemberg has provided information about the Wolf on its website, which can be accessed under the following links: Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Energy Management: The Wolf in Baden-Württemberg and Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Energy Management: Behavior when meeting people and Wolf.

For further questions about the topic of humans and wolf, the forestry test and research institute also provides a FAQ brochure, which can be called up under the following link: Forest test and research institution: FAQS Mensch and Wolf.

As soon as the genetic examinations have been completed, it will be shown whether a wolf is responsible for the death of the five sheep. The results of these examinations could also provide information on whether the wolf is to be classified as potentially dangerous for the Todtnau region. Until then, precautionary measures will continue to be taken to ensure the safety of farm animals and people.
