Lecture series informs about strengthening biodiversity in the settlement area

The importance of biological diversity for our daily life is enormous. It forms the basis for our diet, fertile floors, the water balance and the climate. Therefore, the state government of Baden-Württemberg is committed to the preservation of biological diversity. In order to sensitize and inform the citizens for this topic, the lecture series "Biological Diversity in the settlement area" was launched. In a total of six online events, over 40 adult education centers in the country provide information about various aspects of strengthening biodiversity in the settlement area.

At the opening event, Peter Hauk, Minister of Nutrition, Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection, spoke about the importance of cooperation with the adult education association. He emphasized that the series of lectures enables the proximity to the citizens and encourages each individual to contribute to the biological diversity. Professor Alexandra-Maria Klein from the University of Freiburg presented flowering habitats and insect houses in urban areas and explained the blindness of the biodiversity.

Environment Minister Thekla Walker emphasized that even small measures in their own environment can make a major contribution to the preservation of biological diversity and encouraged the participants to become active. Transport Minister Winfried Hermann pointed out that a lot can be done for the insect world on the side of the road and in the area of street lighting. If more people understand why there are a drastic extinction and how biodiversity can be promoted, more people will also be committed to species and nature conservation.

The special program for strengthening biological diversity in Baden-Württemberg, which has existed since 2018 and has been unique in Germany, promotes measures to preserve biological diversity and at the same time sensitizes citizens to their importance. The program is implemented through the cooperation of the ministries for nutrition, rural areas and consumer protection, for the environment, climate and energy industry as well as for traffic and the Baden-Württemberg Adult Education Association. Around 17.6 million euros are available annually for the next three years. So far, over 100 projects have been funded as part of the program.

The participants of the lecture series receive information and impulses from experts on topics such as biodiversity in the city and light pollution. The goal is to raise awareness of the importance of biological diversity and to create a nationwide educational offer.

The lecture series "Biological Diversity in the Settlement Area" offers a great way to bring the topic of biodiversity into the focus of the public and to inform the citizens of how they can contribute to the preservation of biological diversity. By more conscious handling of nature and small changes in their own living environment, all people can help strengthen the biological diversity and thus maintain our livelihood.
