Wolf kills goat in Bernau

Wolf kills goat in Bernau

dead goat in Bernau was killed by a wolf

On September 2 of this year, a dead goat was discovered in the municipality of Bernau in the Waldshut district. The message went to the forestry and research institution (FVA), which then appeared on site to document the situation and take genetic samples. These samples were then sent to the Senckenberg Center for Wildlife Genetics for an examination.

Now the results of the genetic studies are available and they prove that a wolf has torn the goat. However, it was not possible to identify the animal individually. Only the haplotype HW01 could be found.

The farm animal associations and the region's wildlife officers were informed about the incident. It is particularly worth mentioning that the municipality of Bernau is located in the Wolfsprävention Schwarzwald funding area. Therefore, observations with suspected a wolf were asked to report them to the FVA in Freiburg immediately. The contact details are info@wildtiermonitoring.de or 0761 4018-274.

The wolf is no longer uncommon in Baden-Württemberg and the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy Industry has set up an informative website on the subject of Wolf in Baden-Württemberg.

This incident in Bernau again shows that wolves feel native to the region and also attack farm animals. The exact circumstances of the incident are not known in more detail, but it is important that the population is sensitized and corresponding precautions meet to avoid possible encounters with wolves.

It remains to be seen how the residents of Bernau will react to this incident and which expanded protective measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future
