The state disabled person warns of normalizing the non-invasive prenatal test as a routine examination
The state disabled person, Simone Fischer, has warned on the occasion of the world-down syndrome day about the possible consequences of normalizing the non-invasive prenatal test (NIP) as a routine examination during pregnancy. According to Fischer, an average of nine out of ten women and couples decide on the diagnosis of trisomy 21 for an abortion, which indicates alarming billing figures. In the fourth quarter of 2023, the NIPT was carried out 64,000 times, at around 160,000 births per quarter, which means that there is a nip> on three births.
Simone Fischer emphasized the importance of the protection of the rights of people with disabilities and emphasized that every person has the right to a self -determined life and social participation. She warned that the NIPT should not lead to the selection of children with disabilities and called for the Federal Council decision, which provides monitoring of the consequences of the cash registration of the NIPT.
The NIPT is a pregnant blood test that can indicate trisomies in the child, but is not always reliable and can lead to false positive results, especially among younger pregnant women. The cash registration of the test was decided in September 2019 and since July 2022 the NIPT will be reimbursed by the health insurance companies if certain requirements are met.
There is concern that the normalization of the NIP as a routine examination could lead to an increase in abortions when diagnosing trisomy 21. The demand for monitoring the consequences and comprehensive advice is therefore of great importance.
It remains to be seen how politics will react to the warning of the state disabled officers and how the implementation of the Federal Council decision will progress to check the cash registration of the NIPT. It is crucial that the rights and needs of people with disabilities are still protected and strengthened to ensure an inclusive and diverse society.
