19 million euros for research projects for quantum computers

quantum technologies offer enormous opportunities for the Baden-Württemberg economy. For this reason, the Ministry of Economic Affairs finances six joint research projects, joint research projects on the subject of quantum computers, with over 19 million euros. The projects are intended to research the innovation potential of the quantum computer for economic and scientific applications.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs finances six joint research projects on the subject of quantum computers with over 19 million euros over a period of two years. The project ideas were developed in collaboration with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft as part of a financing call from "Competence center quantum computer Baden-Württemberg" submitted.

huge opportunity for economy and science

"Quantity technologies offer enormous opportunities for our economy. The projects are an important component to further strengthen the existing ecosystem for this future technology from universities, research institutes, start-ups and companies in Baden-Württemberg. In this way we also increase the international visibility of the country as a leading region for mantaneous innovations," said business minister Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut .

"With the selected joint projects, we actively include numerous experts from science and industry to the work of the competence center and research the innovation potential of the quantum computer for a broad range of economic and scientific applications," added the minister. As part of the project, researchers from a total of six Fraunhofer institutes work with 16 other universities, universities and non-university institutes in the country as well as around 40 associated company partners from Baden-Württemberg and Germany. The research and development work on various topics should be promoted using quantum computer resources of the competence center.

Application -oriented research in focus

The projects coordinated by the Fraunhofer Society are pre-competitive and cooperative research projects with the aim of further developing research results in the field of quantum technologies with regard to practical application and can be used for companies. The focus is on the application -oriented research and development of algorithms and architectures of quantum computers. The heart of the quantum algorithm calculations will be the new IBM quantum computer in Ehningen, which is only available to the nationwide Fraunhofer competence network. The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Festival Physics IAF In collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering and Organization IAO in Stuttgart commissioned to the administrative coordination of the Baden-Württemberg competence center.

In the six joint research projects, new approaches to hardware and software for quantum computing as well as a wide range of application are examined. The research focus ranges from new simulation approaches for materials in future energy storage systems to the optimization of investment portfolios in the financial sector and the control of highly efficient operating processes in industrial production to improving the stability parameters in critical energy supply infrastructures.
