The state castles and gardens of Baden-Württemberg expand their app "Monuments 3D" and now allow visitors to look at the Heidelberg Castle Garden of the early 17th century. State Secretary Gisela Splett provided the new offer together with Patricia Alberth, the managing director of the state castles and gardens, as well as Dr. Frithjof Schwartz, the project manager "virtual reconstruction of cultural properties". The app enables guests to dive into the history of the Heidelberg Castle Garden using their smartphone or tablet.
The goal of the state castles and gardens is to make cultural heritage and history virtually tangible. The expansion of the app to Hortus Palatinus is another important step in this direction. The linking of scientific research with digital presentation is of great importance, emphasizes Finance Secretary Gisela Splett.
Thanks to the app, visitors can now explore the cultural heritage and the history of the Heidelberg Castle Garden in a way that has never been there, said Patricia Alberth, managing director of the state castles and gardens. It is a true novelty all over Germany.
The virtual reconstructions of the historical castle garden enable visualization of past times, including historical planning. Sales and examinations of archived documents were used as the basis for the interactive models. A team of humanities scholars and engineers has developed detailed 3D models of the buildings in Hortus Palatinus, which show the intact state of the garden before destroying the Thirty Years' War and in the Palatinate War of Succession. Buildings that were never fully executed due to the 30-year war are also included in the models.
The app offers different modes, including a guided mode with stopping points and an Explorer mode. It also contains interactive sub-models and playful content such as an hidden object in the form of an audio game module. The virtual tours will be offered in German and English in the future and complement the existing foreign -language offer of the romantic castle ruin.
The "Monuments 3D" app with the multimedia tours for Hortus Palatinus is available as a free download in the common app stores. The state locks and gardens of Baden-Württemberg recommend visitors to install the app before visiting their mobile device. WLAN is available at the castle box and a QR code can be scanned for downloading the app.
The new offer is part of the state government's nationwide digitization strategy and contributes to enriching the cultural offer in Baden-Württemberg. Guests can now immerse themselves in the history of the Heidelberg Castle Garden in an innovative way and take a virtual view of past times. The "Monuments 3D" app thus offers a fascinating way to discover the hidden treasures of the past.
