State Advisory Board for Animal Welfare appeals to bird -friendly building
In its current session, the State Advisory Board for Animal Protection Birds before the so -called bird strike (flying against glass surfaces of buildings) is an important concern. The collision with glass panes is one of the most common types of death of birds in the settlement area.
According to a study from 2017, an estimated over 100 to 115 million birds in Germany alone. These include many migratory birds in transit, including endangered bird species. This was announced by the Ministry of Nutrition, Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection on March 27, 2023 in Stuttgart. The advisory board had already dealt with this topic in detail in 2016 and 2019.
Numerous birds live near man or at times stay in built -up areas. In the opinion of the state advisory board for animal welfare, there is a special obligation to make glass areas on buildings bird-proof from both animal welfare perspective and for reasons of nature and species protection. Therefore, all persons involved in the construction and maintenance of buildings are required to take suitable protective measures in order to counteract the considerable losses due to the so -called bird strike on glass surfaces.
glass is dangerous for birds in two ways
glass is dangerous for birds in two ways: transparent windows with a look, such as those used in winter gardens or on balconies, are not recognized by the animals as an obstacle. In turn, strongly reflective slices reflect trees, bushes or the sky and pretend to have a habitat that is actually not available. Commercial stickers with silhouettes of birds of prey are far from sufficient as a deterrent and have not proven themselves in practice.
The guideline "Bird-friendly building with glass and light" (PDF) shows what is important. According to the animal welfare advisory board, it should therefore still be the declared goal of complementing the state building regulations in such a way that glass areas from animal and species protection reasons will have to be designed in the future in the future. In addition, the advisory board recommends that state buildings check their bird security by experts and, if necessary, to have it retrofitted. The Ministry of Nutrition, Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection is in close exchange with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Land Development and Housing, which is also responsible for building law.
