With 383,000 euros for smart cities: state government promotes innovative radio technology
The state government of Baden-Württemberg supports the development of smart digital cities and municipalities by promoting new radio technology. With a grant of a total of 383,000 euros, the Fraunhofer Institute for the Working Management and Organization IAO and the Institute for Occupational Science and Technology Management (IAT) of the University of Stuttgart are to explore the application of Long Range Area Networks (Lorawan) in Baden-Württemberg municipalities and develop practical applications.
This advanced radio technology enables different aspects of urban life, such as the control of parking traffic, the intelligent adaptation of the lighting, the recording of garbage fillings and the automatic irrigation of plants. By using Lorawan, cities and municipalities can develop sustainable, effective and innovative solutions to improve the quality of life and use resources more efficiently.
The deputy prime minister and digitization minister Thomas Strobl emphasizes the importance of this technology for all citizens in the country. The promotion of Lorawan applications in the municipalities is an important step to build a digitally networked and sustainable infrastructure. The implementation of pilot projects should promote new developments in the field of mobility to fully exploit the potential of the technology.
Prof. Dr. Vanessa Borkmann from the Fraunhofer Institute for the Working Management and Organization IAO emphasizes the diversity and scalability of the uses of Lorawan and emphasizes that all municipalities in Baden-Württemberg can benefit from the knowledge and experiences from project work. Together with the state government, the researchers organize digital change in the country and help to strengthen the future viability of cities and municipalities. With the promotion of such innovative projects, digitization is promoted at the local level and the quality of life for all residents is improved.
