Memory of tsunami victims: emotional celebration in Aalen City Church
On December 26, 2024, a commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the devastating tsunamis in Southeast Asia and the dictatorship took place in the Aalen City Church in Sri Lanka. The service was held on Christmas Day and brought together Tamil community members from all over the Ostalb district, including Member of the Bundestag Leni Breymaier and local city councilors.
The service included readings and intercessions in German and Tamil. Thanabalasingam Vyramutha spoke about the current situation in Sri Lanka and the continued war against the Tamil people. Muthu asked those present not to go on vacation in Sri Lanka or other countries in which human rights are violated.

Pastor i.R. In his speech, Bernhard Richter recalled the 15,000 to 20,000 Tamils, who lost their lives 20 years ago, as well as other victims of terror and violence. Judge emphasized the hope and trust in God, who did not leave people alone in difficult times. After the service, the participants lay down flowers and lit tea lights on the baptismal font to commemorate the deceased.
The Tsunami, who met the coasts of Sri Lanka on December 26, 2004, demanded 35,322 human lives and sales of over half a million people from their houses. The disaster was triggered by an earthquake of the thickness of 9.1 in the Indian Ocean and cost a total of 220,000 people in several countries. At that time, Sri Lanka was in a long civil war that ended in 2009.
In the years after, survivors of the tsunamis organized memorial events with candle guards and silence, while at the same time commemorating the many who died during the catastrophe. This year, election posters and election propaganda could have overshadowed the memorial events, such as [al Jazera] (https://www.aljazera.com/features/2014/26/tsunami-horror-haunts-srs-sra- lanka-survivors/) reported.
