studies and investigations
The investigation into the cause of the accident focuses on a possibly bird strike shortly before landing. The tower had previously warned the pilots, and they reported a bird strike via Mayday emergency call. However, the exact circumstances of how the bird strike could damage the chassis are still unclear. South Korea's government has initiated an immediate review of the maintenance documents of all Boeing 737-800 machines of national airlines because six airlines are affected. The South Korean armed forces also check their similar aircraft types.
As a result of the accident, a temporary corpse hall was set up at the airport and the population has been transferred to the state mourning. The incident already has an impact on Jeju Air's flight operations, since about 68,000 tickets were canceled after the accident. In addition, another machine of the same airline reported chassis problems one day after the accident and returned to the starting airport. President Yoon Suk Yeol was suspended in a state crisis, while US authorities, including Boeing and NTSB, offered their support in clarifying the accident. US President Joe Biden also expressed his condolences and support for those affected.
