Green hydrogen for Waiblingen: First buses roll 2025!
In the Rems-Murr district there are exciting news for local public transport: From July 2025, the first fuel cell buses are to roll here, which are operated with locally produced hydrogen. This is the result of a project that Stadtwerke Waiblingen has created in cooperation with the GP Joule company from Schleswig-Holstein. The initiative is called Hy.waiblingen and recently received the contract for the supply of two bus lines with green hydrogen.
In order to create the necessary infrastructure, the construction of a hydrogen petrol station will begin this Thursday. This petrol station will not only refuel the buses, but will also win the hydrogen on site by an electrolyser. The hydrogen is made from regional renewable energies, even if it is still unclear which specific sources are used for this. It was originally planned to produce the hydrogen entirely through photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the Daimler area, but this plan was rejected due to logistical challenges.
important planning security for the project
Approval for the construction and operation of the hydrogen filling station gives the project team valuable planning security. The agreement for refueling the bus lines initially applies for 15 years, with the possibility of an extension. This phase is considered crucial to create a sustainable basis for mobility in the district.
"We are proud of this innovative approach, which can not only increase local value creation, but could also serve as models for future projects," says Bernhard Zipp, Managing Director of Hy.waiblingen and Stadtwerke Waiblingen. He describes the project as a "lighthouse project" for a greener future.
In the overall traffic concept for the Rems-Murr district, fuel cell buses play a central role. With the expected annual hydrogen volume of around 148,000 kilograms, the petrol station will be very busy. If the need increases, an extension of the capacities is already planned. This allows trucks and cars to be refueled at the petrol station beyond buses.
reference project from North Friesland
The Waiblingen hydrogen mobility project is based on the Efarm project in North Friesland, which was also initiated by GP Joule and is funded by the federal government with over five million euros. The first groundbreaking will be symbolically set shortly, and the entire system should be ready for operation at the end of the year.
The district responsible are optimistic that a partner was found with the Hy.waiblingen to promote climate -neutral traffic. "We are pleased that we not only bring environmentally friendly technology into the district, but also rely on sustainably produced fuel," explains Daniel Wiedmann, head of the office for local public transport.
Overall, this ambitious project is viewed as a milestone for regional sustainable mobility. The first fuel cell buses could help to further reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and to make the streets in the Rems-Murr district more environmentally friendly.
