On April 19, 2025, the German bishops commemorate Joseph Ratzinger's election to the Pope exactly 20 years ago. The election Benedict XVI. Was announced on the evening of April 19, 2005 with the climbing of white smoke signs from the chimney of the Sistine chapel. A little later, the new Pope stepped onto the Balcony of St. Peter's Basilica and introduced himself with a signed charisma. The election came after the death of John Paul II, who was in office for almost 27 years. Benedict XVI. was considered one of the favorites in the conclave, despite its advanced age. His pontificate ended abruptly in February 2013 when he was the first Pope to do without his office for 700 years because he was no longer able to perform the tasks in terms of health.
After his resignation, Benedict XVI lived. Almost another decade in the Vatican as an emeritus Pope before died on December 31, 2022 at the age of 95.
