500 -kilo aviation bomb discovered in Bonn's district - evacuation underway
In the Hardtberg district of Bonn was discovered on Monday a 500 -kilogram English flying bomb from the Second World War. The city of Bonn announced that evacuation was necessary to clear the area within a radius of 500 meters. Buildings of the Bundeswehr property were affected on the Hardthöhe and some residential buildings. Due to the discovery of the bomb, several streets had to be closed and could not be approached. The defusing of the bomb was planned for the same day and should take place as soon as possible.
The evacuation began in the evening and affected around 2100 people who lived in the affected area. A special contact point has been set up to offer support to those affected. Marked evacuation buses were available to safely bring the residents there. Despite the size of the evacuation zone, the Ministry of Defense was not directly affected.
The flying bomb was discovered during a targeted examination that took place in connection with the planned expansion of a public swimming pool. This investigation also included exploratory work in the ground to track down ordnance. Since the ordnance clearance service was already on site due to the exploratory work, the situation could be quickly monitored and controlled. The municipal regulatory service took over the operations management and set up a operating control center nearby.
