A3 in traffic jam: construction sites expected from Tuesday at Siebengebirge
Spur grooves and many damage: A3 renewal in the Siebengebirge
From Tuesday after Easter, an extensive renovation process begins on the A3 in the south of North Rhine-Westphalia, which will face drivers with challenges. The Siebengebirge exit will be closed from 00:01 and is expected to be closed until June 16. This measure is part of a comprehensive renovation that has been carried out since 2019 and extends over a 42-kilometer route that connects the Cologne-Heumar triangle with Bad Honnef.
The current construction site affects an eleven -kilometer section between the Siebengebirge junction in Königswinter and the Bonn/Siegburg cross. Autobahn GmbH of the federal government has emphasized that the extensive work is necessary to ensure security and traffic quality on this highly frequented section of the motorway.
"Renewal necessary"
In the course of the renovation work, a total of nine bridges are repaired or completely rebuilt. In addition, noise -reducing asphalt is laid and new noise barriers are installed in order to reduce the effects of traffic on the residents. During the first phase of the construction work, the traffic towards Cologne is only guided over two out of three lanes available, which has to be expected with increased traffic jams.
The loads on this section of the route are considerable. Around 82,000 vehicles use the north-south highway every day, including a considerable share of trucks. Forecasts indicate that these numbers could increase up to 100,000 vehicles every day by 2030. Autobahn GmbH moved the associated damage in the road, such as lane grooves and cracks, to determine that a fundamental renewal of the road is essential.
The high traffic load and the need to maintain and improve the infrastructure are currently of great importance. It remains to be seen how the construction work will affect traffic and to what extent the measures taken can contribute to improving the traffic situation in the Siebengebirge.
