New ID cards can be delivered by post

The possibility of having ID documents such as identity cards and passports deliver conveniently to your home will become a reality from May 2, 2025. Deutsche Post has announced that they offer the delivery of these documents after receiving the order from Bundesdruckerei GmbH.

With this new regulation, applicants can completely avoid the way to the office for collection of the new ID document. So far, the applicant had to go to office twice: once for application and once again for collection. This innovation aims to simplify the process for citizens and save time.

The ID documents are supplied to the applicants' house inputs by the procedure called "Postident Delivery". To ensure security, the recipients must identify with a valid ID document before receiving their envelope. A fee of 15 euros is charged for this service, which is to be paid directly when the application.

The idea for the direct delivery of ID documents was already promised by the Federal Ministry of the Interior in November 2022 when it was realized that this could benefit both the citizens and the administrative authorities. The city day of North Rhine-Westphalia has also campaigned for this step and emphasized that such a measure would increase efficiency in the public service.

With this initiative, another step towards digitization and civil friendliness in the administration is taken. The possibility of receiving important documents directly at home will not only reduce the bureaucratic effort, but also help to increase the satisfaction of the citizens with the services of the authorities.
