rail travelers in Rhineland-Palatinate for challenges: construction sites provide disabilities

Message from 02.05.2025

travelers and commuters in Rhineland-Palatinate will have to adapt to considerable restrictions on rail traffic in the coming weeks. In particular, the regions around Mainz and Koblenz are affected by numerous construction sites that represent a challenge for passengers.

The effects on S-Bahn traffic are significant. From 3 May to May 23, no trains will run between Wiesbaden-Hauptbahnhof and Kelsterbach. On selected weekends in May, S-Bahn traffic between Wiesbaden and the regional train station at Frankfurt Airport is also interrupted. At the same time, there are many regional train rides between Frankfurt and Mainz, while some connections are redirected or with restrictions.

This weekend, full closures between Ingelheim and Mainz Central Station are planned, which will lead to further restrictions. A bus replacement traffic is set up for affected travelers that run between Mainz, Kelsterbach and other relevant stations. The railway has also announced that it continuously monitor the utilization of trains and replacement traffic in order to offer passengers the best possible service.

A special focus is on Sunday, May 4th, on which both a half marathon and a football game take place in Mainz. In order to enable visitors to travel, special trains are planned for what additional travelers can expect in the already heavily used transport system.

For commuters between Mainz and Frankfurt, there are alternative options that are covered by S-Bahn and regional train lines. Restrictions must also be taken into account on the route between Cologne and Koblenz, since traffic is fully blocked by May 19, which requires the use of replacement buses.

Deutsche Bahn recommends checking the current connections before starting the trip to avoid unpleasant surprises. Information on this is available from both the "DB Navigator" app and on the platforms.
