Cologne Hbf closed-ICE sprinter Bonn-Berlin
The Cologne main station is largely closed due to construction work for over two weeks, which has a significant impact on train traffic. The construction site associated with the commissioning of a new electronic signal box affects both regional and long-distance trains. Many travelers have to expect that their connections will not be available as usual.
The ICE sprinter is particularly affected on the Bonn-Köln-Berlin route, which is completely eliminated. In addition, trains to Brussels are diverted via Krefeld, which brings additional bylets and waiting times for passengers. Some ICE and IC trains use the right side of the Rhine for their trips, while other connections, such as those between Hamburg and Bremen, can take place without restrictions.
The restrictions also influence the regional express lines, regional railway lines and several S-Bahn lines that normally run over the main train station. Travelers have to switch to buses, which brings additional inconvenience. This situation results in an increased burden for passengers that rely on public transport.
The construction work is one of the largest closures around Cologne and are scheduled for the period until Monday, May 19th, at 5 a.m. During this time, decisive routes, including the route from Cologne to Bonn and Koblenz as well as connections to Aachen and Euskirchen, are not navigable. Cologne Central Station, with around 180,000 travelers the most frequented train station in North Rhine-Westphalia, comes to its load limit.
With the completion of the new signal box, however, an improvement in traffic control within the Cologne rail network is expected. Travelers are asked to check possible alternatives before starting their trip and to inform themselves about current traffic changes in order to minimize inconvenience.
