Frechen: Explosion of costs of partial connection of the A 4 in Königsdorf
The Autobahn 4, which runs frequented between Kerpen and Cologne, has been affected by an extensive construction site at Frechen rest area for several years. The situation has increasingly tightened because the lanes narrowed in both directions and the speed limit was reduced. This position has developed into one of the main parts in the region.
The focus of the construction work is the part of the Frechen-Königsdorf partial connection, which can only be used in the direction of Cologne. The complexity of the project is explained, among other things, by the construction of a steel arch bridge, which leads over the adjacent railway line, which brings additional challenges.Originally, the partial connection should be completed in the next few years, but several completion dates have been postponed several times over time. According to the State Operation Roads, completion in 2027 is now expected, while the costs of 24 million to 37 million euros have now exploded. This significant increase in costs raises questions about the planning and execution processes.
The meaning of the connection cannot be overlooked. It is planned to relieve the passage through the town in Frechen-Königsdorf by leading traffic more through the new connection. The partial connection is connected to Landstrasse 361 (Aachener Straße) and could thus improve the regional traffic situation.
The planned buildings testify to the dimension of the project; Among other things, a new bridge and various underpasses are planned. The steel arch bridge, which also follows an elaborate construction process, received special attention so as not to disrupt rail traffic. However, the construction work became disabled by flood events in the summer of 2021, which resulted in a break that lasted several months.
Currently it is still unclear whether the new schedules for the project can be observed. As part of the last plans, a roundabout is also an essential part of the connection, the completion of which was dated to 2026.
