Bonn plans conversion: Natural grass in Lengsdorf becomes artificial turf pitch

The city of Bonn plans to convert the natural grass field on Rita-Maiburg-Straße in Lengsdorf into an artificial turf pitch. This decision was made by the Hardtberg district council on May 6, 2025, with the order to the administration to write out the necessary plans and obtain permits. The final decision depends on a recommendation of the committee for the environment, climate and local agenda.

The initiative goes back to a citizens' application and a decision by the Hardtberg district council of January 24, 2023. The aim of the project is to improve training and play conditions for VfL Lengsdorf in 1972 in order to make the sports facility accessible to wider use, also for other clubs and school sports. The existing natural lawn system, which was converted in 2017, suffers from waterlogging and insufficient irrigation in dry periods, which means that the usability is severely restricted.

A artificial turf pitch offers significant advantages over natural lawn, especially with regard to the service life, which increases significantly. It is planned to adapt the square to the standard size of 90 by 60 meters, which opens up new perspectives in width and competitive sports to VfL Lengsdorf. In addition, the possibility is created to better integrate school sport into the offer.

In view of the situation in the landscape protection area, however,

a nature conservation liberation is required. As early as 2024, a landscape maintenance plan and a species protection report were drawn up, which evaluate the effects of the renovation on nature. These reports come to the conclusion that negative interventions can be compensated for by suitable measures.

outlook and financing

The planned construction costs for the conversion amount to around 863,000 euros, plus planning costs of around 145,000 euros. The necessary funds were planned in the investment household of the sports and pool office and are requested for the double budget 2027/2028. After approval of the budget by the district government, the planning services can take place.
