Court of Auditors criticizes sluggish bridge modernization - Ministry sees itself in the schedule
The Federal Audit Office has sharply criticized the Federal Ministry of Transport for the slow renovation of bridges in Germany. President Kay Scheller described the gap in the bridge moderation program as clear and pointed out that the intermediate balance of the ministry was misleading in essential points. The ministry, on the other hand, emphasized that the schedule for the implementation of the program was observed.
In 2022, the Federal Ministry of Transport started a program for the renovation of brass bridges, of which 4,000 are located in the heavily loaded motorway core network alone. However, the intended conclusion of the renovations by 2032 is considered unrealistic, since only about 40 percent of the planned sub -structures could be modernized by the end of 2024, and the annual progress decreased.
The Court of Auditors recommended that new and expansion projects reduce to create more resources for bridge modernization. Long -term and earmarked provision of budget funds is absolutely necessary to secure the infrastructure in Germany. At the same time, the number of bridges to be renovated was corrected from 4000 to a total of 5000, which could further increase the criticism of the inaccurate presentation of the program.
traffic safety and the economic performance of Germany are at risk from the slow pace of the renovations. The Court of Auditors warned of a progressive decline in bridges, which cannot be stopped without immediate measures. The Federal Audit Office therefore calls for the provision of considerable financial resources to successfully carry out the upcoming work.
The federal government had planned to renovate large bridges first, which, however, leads to delays due to the higher complexity and the longer period of time. In view of the urgency of the topic, the ministry emphasized that the modernization of bridges on motorways and federal roads was a top priority.
