Bundeswehr starts a new support area for ABC defense in Bonn
The Bundeswehr's ABC defense command: / mobile analysis ability and professional expertise
On April 29, 2025, the new support area of the Bundeswehr in Bonn will be officially put into service. Already on April 1, full operational capacity was reached to meet the special challenges in the defense/interface to the Bundeswehr. A central element of this new structure is the ABC defense command in Bruchsal, which has around 2,500 posts.
The ABC defense describes the ability of the armed forces to protect themselves against atomic, biological and chemical threats and to operate in corresponding situations. Comprehensive skills in this area include advice, information about potential hazards and decontamination measures after events with ABC threats. These competencies are in demand both in the area of application and domestic and serve to protect the troops and critical infrastructures.
In order to optimize the preparation for use, a specific threat and risk analysis is carried out for each mission. From this, the specialists derive the required defense skills that are tailored to the respective operating conditions. In addition, the ABC defense workers provide administrative assistance for federal and state authorities who may not have sufficient capacities to react to ABC threats.
In order to meet future challenges in security provision, the ABC defense command of the Bundeswehr and the Federal Office for Population Protection and Disaster Aid (BBK) initiated a cooperation agreement. This cooperation aims to effectively ensure Germany's extensive security and to strengthen the Bundeswehr in its ability to support danger.
