DAZN relies on the arbitral tribunal: dispute over Bundesliga TV rights escalated

The Internet broadcaster DAZN switched on the German Institution for Arbitration in the dispute with the German Football League. The conflict is about the allocation of TV rights for the Bundesliga, in particular the right-wing package B for seasons 2025/26 to 2028/29, which was awarded to Sky. DAZN claims that the DFL rejected its more financially attractive offer due to a short -term bank guarantee.

The DFL, on the other hand, has stated that DAZN's offers did not meet the conditions of tender and were therefore not taken into account. The league association rejects allegations from DAZN not to have been informed correctly about the contractual conditions. In view of the disputes and mutual accusations, the legal dispute is now clarified before an arbitration court.

An arbitration procedure usually involves the naming of impartial referees by the parties, who then choose a chairman together. The three -member arbitral tribunal strives for a mutual solution; Otherwise it will be a decision like a ordinary dish. Such decisions have the legal effect of a judicial judgment, but can only be challenged for formal errors and usually last shorter than state procedures.

The current dispute is part of the past contractual conflicts of the DFL, such as the lengthy dispute with Discovery/Eurosport due to outstanding payments in 2020. Such arguments illustrate the financial importance and sensitivity in the awarding of TV rights in professional sports, in particular in the football industry. The arbitration procedure will now show whether DAZN and the DFL reach an agreement or whether the court has to make a decision.
