Cologne Central Station: Exceptionally brazen shoplifter
late Sunday evening, April 27, there was a remarkable theft in Cologne Central Station, which attracted the attention of the security forces. A 52-year-old man entered a supermarket in the station building around 9:30 p.m. and decided on a strikingly brazen purchase.
The suspect, a man from Sri Lanka, took a roll container out of the warehouse and began to fill it out of the shelves with goods. The entire process is said to have extended over a period of about an hour and a half without the security forces or other customers noticed anything. The spokeswoman for the federal police said that apparently nobody in the market reacted to the unusual activities of the man.

In addition to the goods already collected, he filled several shopping bags and a garbage bag with baked goods and placed everything on his car. Shortly before he left the business, he reached two beer bottles when walking past. All of this happened, while the man took various receipts from the garbage next to the self-service checkout and distributed it to the bags. Ultimately, he left the supermarket without paying.
The shop detective did not long for himself and provided the man who then informed the federal police. The value of the goods that the 52-year-old wanted to take with him amounts to 1,200 euros. After his arrest, he was led into police custody and has to answer to court on April 28th.

It is astonishing that the man is already known to the authorities. The public prosecutors in several German cities were already looking for similar property offenses. In addition, he cannot show a residence status or place of residence in Germany. This information gives a light on the challenges with which the police authorities are confronted when it comes to repeated offenses in train stations and other public institutions.
