3,000 cyclists demonstrated in Düsseldorf for a bicycle -friendly NRW: "Nordradwestfalen: do not make - make it!"

Last Sunday, around 3,000 cyclists gathered in Düsseldorf to demonstrate for a bicycle-friendly traffic policy in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The event, organized by the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC), attracted participants from different cities such as Dortmund, Aachen and Bonn, which opened early in the morning. Despite changeable weather conditions, Düsseldorf became the country's bicycle capital on this day.

A central concern of the demonstration was the urgency to implement the existing traffic planning quickly. In her speech, Daniela Günther, the chair of the Düsseldorf ADFC, emphasized that many plans to improve the cycle paths are often unused. She asked the decision -makers in the municipalities to no longer delay these plans and actively work on the creation of secure cycling infrastructure.

Susanne Niemann, chair of the ADFC Landesverband NRW, underlined the growing bicycle traffic figures, where the implementation of safe cycle paths often lags behind. Their demand was aimed at the political actors to set concrete priorities in favor of cycling. These urgent appeals were supported by Vera Konrad, a representative of the newly founded "Junge ADFC", who made further central demands.

Konrad emphasized the need for a brave turnaround. Her three main demands on the municipalities in NRW outline the aspects of security, speed of implementation and a fairer space requirement in the traffic area. She pays particular attention to the fact that the street space should not be reserved only for the car, but also has to take into account the needs of cyclists and pedestrians.

The demonstration ended with a joint bike tour through the Düsseldorf city center, which led over several bridges and through areas specially accessible to cyclists. This family cycling meeting was not only a collection of fellow campaigners for a common goal, but also a strong sign of the change in the country's transport policy.

The demands and the courage of the demonstrators testify that cycling in North Rhine -Westphalia is a central topic of the upcoming local elections and urgently needs to be more careful to ensure sustainable and safe mobility for all citizens.
