Engelbert Humperdinck returns to Siegburg - 35 statues for the city
Project in Siegburg: Humperdinck for everyone
Engelbert Humperdinck, the composer born in Siegburg, has returned to his hometown more than a century after his death: with a series of sculptures that his person honor. This initiative, which is under the title "Humperdinck for everyone", comprises a total of 35 one meter high statues, which were presented in front of the composer's birthplace, in the Siegburg city museum. When unveiling the Association of Humperdinck friends handed over the first copies to their new owners.
The origin of these statues was inspired by the 170th birthday of Humperdinck in the previous year and is a reference to a similar action with Beethoven statues in Bonn. The chairwoman of the association, Susanne Haase-Mühlbauer, expressed that Humperdinck's work, in particular the opera "Hänsel and Gretel", was internationally recognized, but did not experience the appreciation in his home country. The statues are intended to create an identity -creating element that strengthens the connection to the city.
The first 35 copies are already out of print
The figures were made from weather -resistant synthetic resin and have a weight of 13.2 kilograms. In order to ensure the longevity of the color design, it is recommended to place the statues in protected locations. Irmi Wette, the composer's great -grand native, has created the sculptures based on photos and templates in her workshop. She sees the statue as a monument that proudly refers to the cultural heritage of the family.
The first edition of the Humperdinck statues was funded by the funds of urban development. The deputy of Siegburg, Martin Rosorius, emphasizes the importance of art and culture for the cityscape and is convinced that the presence of the statues will increase interest in Humperdinck's life and work. All 35 statues of the first edition have already found an owner, and there are plans for another reprint, the price of which is expected to be 400 euros.
The Humperdinck friends are already accepting inquiries for further copies. Information on the acquisition can be requested directly from the club members. The statues are not only viewed as an artistic element, but also as a way to strengthen the local connection to Humperdinck's legacy and thus enrich the cultural life in Siegburg.
