number of employed people in NRW increased by 0.6 percent in 2023
In 2023, the number of employed people in North Rhine-Westphalia rose to around 9.8 million by 54,200. This increase of 0.6 percent compared to the previous year shows a positive development in the state's labor market. According to the preliminary results of the State Statistical Office of Information and Technology North Rhine-Westphalia, an increase in employment was recorded in 35 of the 53 circles and independent cities.
The cities with the highest percentage growth are Mülheim an der Ruhr with an increase of 1.9 percent as well as Bonn and the district of Viersen, each recorded 1.8 percent growth. In contrast, Solingen, Duisburg and Hamm experienced declines in the number of employment, which indicates regional differences in economic development.
More than three quarters of the employees in North Rhine-Westphalia work in the service sector. With around 7.6 million employed people, this corresponds to an increase of 0.7 percent compared to 2022. Particularly high proportions of service employees can be found in Bonn (94.2 percent), Münster (90.3 percent) and Düsseldorf (90.0 percent).
The contribution of the producing trade to the overall economy is 21.7 percent, with the number of employees in this sector stable at around 2.1 million. The district of Olpe has the highest proportion of workers in the manufacturing trade, followed by Märkische Kreis and Gütersloh.
Another important aspect is the number of marginally employed. In 2023, around 1.2 million people worked in a marginal employment relationship. This stability indicates that this sector has not changed significantly compared to the previous year.
The published figures are based on the calculations created as part of the General Revision 2024 of the working group for employment. This revision serves to check all data sources and calculation methods to ensure the accuracy of the statistics.
