Ex-Bonn coach Iisalo becomes head coach in Memphis
The Memphis Grizzlies have appointed Tuomas Iisalo as their new head coach. The Finnish trainer, who previously worked as an assistant coach at the Grizzlies, already took on the role of the main trainee at the end of March. This decision follows the sudden dismissal of Taylor Jenkins. Under Iisalo, however, the team only achieved limited success in the playoffs and was eliminated in the first round with 0: 4 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
iisalo brings an impressive balance from his time in the German Basketball Bundesliga. He achieved great success with the Telekom Baskets Bonn, including the winning of the Champions League and the final participation in the Bundesliga. Under his leadership, Bonn secured the first international title in club history. Previously, he led the Crailsheim Merlins 2018 to the Bundesliga, which underlines his skills in building and leading teams.
After his time in Bonn, Iisalo moved to Paris Basketball in 2023, where he continued to work successfully. In his first season he won the Eurocup and reached the playoff final in the French championship. These successes brought him the call of a competent trainer who can work in different leagues.
The people responsible for the grizzlies show great trust in Iisalo. Zachary Z. Kleiman, President and General Manager of Basketball Operations, was positive about the philosophy of the new trainer. He emphasized that Iisalo's teams always played disciplined and exceeded expectations.
The obligation of Iisalo is part of the efforts of the Memphis Grizzlies to continue to establish itself in the NBA and to become more competitive in the future. With his previous experience and success, Iisalo is expected to lead the team to a new level.
