Bicycle road in Hennef: Cyclists enjoy new priority between Warth and Geistingen
bike commuter route: Hennef now has the third bicycle road
In Hennef, the third bicycle road was recently officially opened, which establishes an important connection between the districts of Warth and Geistingen. The signage is already appropriate, while some pictograms are still missing on the road, which are to be applied in better weather. Mayor Mario Dahm emphasized that cyclists have priority on this route, which means that they are allowed to drive side by side and cannot be beset by the motorized road users.
This new route begins at the Lipgenshof and leads over the Mittelstraße, past the train station, via Humperdinckstrasse and Wehrstraße to the Hennef-West comprehensive school. The bicycle road is part of an inter -municipal wheel commuter route that connects Hennef with Sankt Augustin, Siegburg and Troisdorf. Birgit Münch, the head of the mobility department in the planning office, described the route as the longest bicycle road in Hennef, which also underlines the relevance of this measure.
The new bicycle road should not only ensure safe and comfortable access to schools, the inner city area and the train station, but also improve the bicycle friendliness in Hennef as a whole. This is a central goal in the Mobility master plan, which focuses on the promotion of bicycle traffic and emphasizes the protection of weaker road users. The regulations for the right of way and driving side by side are intended to make the use of the bicycle road more secure and inviting.
The car traffic remains allowed on the new bicycle road, but the right of way to the cyclists has been changed. This means that cyclists now have priority and the previous right-left rules no longer apply. It was also ensured that a minimum distance of 1.50 meters must be observed when bicycles overtake to ensure the safety of cyclists.
In order to make the route optimally, narrow spaces had to be defused at various points and other infrastructural measures were taken in addition to parking. Another expansion towards Sankt Augustin is already being planned, with the implementation of the overall project in several sections. The planned measures should further optimize the connection to the overarching cycling network and increase the attractiveness of cycling in Hennef.
