Cologne main station for more than 2 weeks almost completely blocked

The blocking at Cologne Central Station, which is supposed to continue for more than two weeks, mainly affects regional traffic and is considered one of the greater impairments in the Cologne area. The regulations include the complete setting of train traffic between Cologne and Koblenz on the left side of the Rhine. This measure has a direct impact on routes to Euskirchen and Aachen, while the underlying routes on the right side of the Rhine are still in operation.

The Cologne Central Station, which is frequented by around 180,000 travelers every day, is the focus of traffic impairments during this time. Transport expert Marcel Winter from Go.rheinland expressed that everyone involved was aware that this block is a significant burden for passengers.

more than 100 buses replace regional trains

In order to compensate for the failure of the trains, extensive rail replacement traffic is set up. Over 100 buses are mobilized to replace the six affected regional express lines, the six regional railway lines and several S-Bahn connections. The bus fleet is expected to cover a total of around 700,000 kilometers throughout the closure period and serve important stations around Cologne, including the Messe/Deutz, Hansaring train stations, as well as stops in Kerpen, Euskirchen and Bonn.

The reasons for these comprehensive measures include the rest of the work and the examination of the technology of the new signal box "Linker Rhein". These NGOs expect that when the new signal box is completed, rail operations in Cologne knot can be made more flexible and less prone to interference by the end of 2025. The total costs for both measures amount to around 360 million euros, which gives hope for long -term improvements for travelers.

In the meantime, passengers are asked to adapt to the changes in traffic and possible delays, while the railway indicates that the new signals should ensure a more reliable connection in the future.
