too few Hessen in Berlin
The Hessian CDU has a significantly lower presence in the federal government in the current political context, especially under the expected Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Historically, the Hessian Union was strongly represented in the federal governments led by the Union for many years. Hessian politicians like Peter Tauber and Christian Schwarz-Schilling enjoyed high positions. However, this tradition seems to be under pressure.
With the current occupation of the cabinet, it is surprising that the Hessian Union is only represented with two Parliamentary State Secretaries. This is in contrast to the performance of the Hessian CDU in the last state election and its support for Merz during the election campaign. Michael Brand and Michael Meister, who are now state secretaries, have experience, but many in the state party had hoped for a stronger representation at the federal level.
The role of Michael Brand in the Ministry of Education and Family and the responsibility of Michael Meister in the Chancellery could be an advantage for Hesse. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether these positions are sufficient to represent the interests of the country. Boris Rhein, the Hessian Prime Minister, will be under pressure to represent the central concerns of the country to federal politics.
Another aspect is the challenge of replacing the position of Nancy Faeser, the outgoing Federal Minister of the Interior. Their high recognition and visibility could have robbed the influence of the Hessian State Association in Berlin from another important factor. This illustrates the difficulties of the Hessian CDU to position their key figures in federal politics.
Overall, it can be seen that the Hessian CDU faces the challenge of securing its relevance in federal politics. The impression that there are no suitable talents and the Hessian interests are not sufficiently taken into account could have long -term consequences for the political landscape in Hesse and its influence on the federal level.
