The future of interreligious dialogue - University of Bonn

The University of Bonn has established itself with the introduction of the Annemarie Schimmel Lectures to an important center for interreligious dialogue. This series of lectures, which has been taking place annually since 2023 in June, is dedicated to central questions of comparative theology and enables leading scientists to present their research to a broad audience. These events aim to promote both the excellence in religious research and to intensify interreligious exchange, which is particularly important in today's multicultural society.

An outstanding personality of this series is Francis X. Clooney SJ, a renowned professor of comparative theology at the Harvard Divinity School. Clooney is considered one of the fathers of this discipline and focuses on Hinduism, especially its extensive commentary literature. In his lectures, he will present a vision in which a church -ready church acts across all religious borders. This is particularly relevant because the interreligious dialogue puts current social challenges such as tolerance and respect.

The Annemarie Schimmel Lectures offer a platform on which experts and the interested public can come together. The first date in 2025 takes place on June 2 and is devoted to the challenges of today's interreligious encounters. The following days address the importance of Hindu poetry and the future of interreligious learning. These lectures will not only be of academic interest, but also offer an opportunity to step into an active dialogue.

Annemarie Schimmel, after which this series is named, was an outstanding Islamic science researcher who built bridges between different cultures and religions. Her work on Islamic mysticism has promoted ecumenical understanding in a time when religious borders often have a divisive effect. Their legacy not only lives on in their writings, but is also continued by initiatives such as the Annemarie Schmimmel-Lectures.

The International Center for Comparative Theology and Social Issues (CTSI) at the University of Bonn plays a central role in bundling interdisciplinary research projects in the field of comparative theology. In the long term, this institution will help promote the critical examination of various religious traditions and to develop solutions for social challenges that arise from the diversity of beliefs.
