Cologne is preparing: UEFA Euro 2024 brings public viewing areas and special security precautions

In the summer of 2024, the city of Cologne will welcome numerous football fans from Europe as Host City for the UEFA Euro 2024. International guests from countries such as Switzerland, Hungary, Scotland, Belgium, Romania, England and Slovenia are expected. In order to be prepared for the expected great crowds of fans, the city of Cologne has set a special area on the Konrad-Adenauer bank, which is to be used as a separate public viewing zone if necessary.

During the five games in Cologne between June 15 and June 30, 2024, Host City Cologne on Heumarkt and in the dance fountain offers two public viewing areas. These areas can offer a total of up to 20,000 fans. Due to forecasts by security authorities and national fan associations, it is expected that so many fans will travel to at least two games that the planned fan zones will not be sufficient. For security reasons, a separate public viewing area with the appropriate infrastructure is therefore planned for certain gaming pairings.

The city administration, security authorities and traffic experts have agreed on the area of the Konrad-Adenauer bank for this special use. With a gross area of almost 30,000 square meters, this area offers enough space and meets the required requirements. In order to keep traffic impairments as low as possible, it is planned to block the area as short as possible before and after the games.

During the use of the Konrad-Adenauer bank as a public viewing zone, a private security service will be on site to ensure the security around the site. In addition, a separate movement area for residents, emergency services and security is set up along the Rheinuferstrasse. An information event for residents will take place on May 13, 2024 in the Marriott Hotel to obtain detailed information about the measures. This should ensure that the EM 2024 in Cologne will be a safe and entertaining event for everyone involved.
