Crime in Baden-Württemberg is rising rapidly: Violence and robberies are increasing
Crime in Baden-Württemberg, especially in Stuttgart, has risen alarming in recent years. According to police crime statistics, the police recorded significant growth in assault and robberies last year. The increase in sexual offenses by a good two percent to 12,671 cases, including rape, sexual coercion and harassment, is also worrying.
Overall, the number of registered crimes rose by more than eight percent to 594,657 cases in 2023, which led to a frequency number of 5345 offenses per 1000 inhabitants. A positive development is evident in the educational rate, which rose from 61.4 to 63.5 percent. Interestingly, 48 percent of the suspects had no German passport, the highest value in many years.
The increase in crime is also observed at nationwide level. Germany did not record as many crimes last year as in 2016, with a high proportion of foreign suspects involved. Despite this worrying development, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasizes that Germany is still one of the safest countries in the world.
The Federal Criminal offices lead three crucial factors for the 2023 crime growth: the aftermath of Corona pandemic, the high inflation and the strong immigration. These factors can lead to difficult living conditions and integration problems, which negatively influences the crime rate.
The German police union in the southwest is outraged by the increasing crime. It calls for more personnel for the police, increased use of the judiciary's criminal framework for deterrent and the immediate expulsion of delinquent foreigners after being worn out of their punishment. The discussion about security policy is controversial, especially with a view to measures such as video surveillance in public locations to combat crime.
