Pulheim: Olaf Nicolai designs performance for the synagogue

The renowned German artist Olaf Nicolai continues his project in the synagogue in Pulheim and has now announced the dates for the upcoming events. The opening will take place on Thursday, May 22nd, at 6 p.m. in the Martinushaus, Venloer Straße 546. Interested visitors are asked to register in advance by email or by phone.

As part of the project, the guests then go to the synagogue, where an extraordinary performance takes place. Countertenor Daniel Gloger and the bass baritone Pascal Zurek present a vocal piece specially created for this project. This piece is inspired by a quote from the Talmud: "An unexpected dream is like an unread letter", which reflects the central theme of the event.

Pulheim: inspired by the Talmud

In his performance,

Olaf Nicolai addresses the importance of communication, which is of great relevance in a place like the synagogue. The focus is on speaking, reading and discussing texts and the interpretation of language. These elements are crucial for social architecture and the joint character of the synagogue.

The Talmud word quoted runs like a thread through the entire performance and encourages the participants to think about reading and the importance of letters. The human voice, a recurring motif in Nicolais, also plays a central role here and conveys the essence of human communication in a poetic way.

further performances

Until September, further nine performances are planned in the synagogue. Among the participants are the mezzo -soprano Truike van der Poel and the tenor Andreas Fischer, who will appear on several dates. The events offer a diverse mix of music and interaction and invite you to rediscover the cultural and artistic importance of the synagogue.

Olaf Nicolai is one of the most influential artists in his generation. His works that include installations, videos and performances express complex relationships between art and nature, body, time and space. His work is estimated internationally, which is also reflected in invitations to significant exhibitions such as Documenta and the Venice Biennals.
