lived town twinning as part of Chemnitz 2025: Cultural capital of Europe
in 2025 Chemnitz was recognized as the cultural capital of Europe, an important event for the Saxon city and its surroundings. In a partnership with 38 municipalities from Central Saxony, the Erzgebirge and the Zwickauer Land, a program is being developed under the motto “C the Unseen” that aims to put people, places and activities at the center of public perception that have so far received less attention. This cultural initiative offers an excellent opportunity for cooperation, especially between Chemnitz and Düsseldorf, which have been maintaining a town twinning for 37 years.
Local cultural development in Chemnitz is to be strengthened by various projects, with the focus on the “urban economy”. This newly created space, which was built on the site of a former company of the Chemnitz waste management industry, is one of the intervention areas that are developed as part of the Cultural City City Activities. The aim is to create creative offers that strengthen the community and offer space for cultural exchange.
One of the first artistic installations in this context is “Eight Planets, One Star, One World”, which will open on May 6, 2025 by the Düsseldorf artist Mischa Kuball. This walk -in installation, which reflects a visual and emotional experience of the universe, invites visitors to actively deal with art and rediscover the perception of space and light. Entry will be free of charge to enable all citizens of Chemnitz and international guests an enriching art experience.
In addition to Kuball's installation, the “Fem_Pop_Fest” is carried out as part of the city twinning. This event aims to network musicians from Düsseldorf and Chemnitz and organize a festival that is committed to equality and promoting talents in the music scene. This exchange not only promotes cultural diversity, but also a sustainable development of the local creative scene.
Numerous Düsseldorf artists are integrated in various projects that take place during the Capital of Culture. This includes, among other things, a choir project by the theater collective “Pierrevers” and an exhibition by Corina Gertz about Chemnitz women from the turning season. This extensive cooperation and the cultural exchange between Chemnitz and Düsseldorf underline the advantages of intercultural networking and encourage participation in the artistic design and further development of both cities.
