Siegburg: Save usable food, do not throw away

In the Rhein-Sieg district, large amounts of food that are still edible are located every year, but are sorted out due to best-preservation data or minimal defects. The association "Food Savior with Heart", founded by Jessica and Alexander Korsch from Siegburg-Kaldauen, has set itself the task of preserving these foods from the bin. Six days a week, the rescuers collect the excess food from supermarkets and provide them with the community.

Cooperation with local shops is crucial. In the HIT market in Troisdorf-Sieglar, for example, there is an agreement that the food rescuers can pick up sorted out goods. Daily, boxes with bread, fruit and vegetables are provided every day, whereby the team is making a first sorting on site. Obviously no longer edible products are disposed of, while most foods are further exploited.

The initiative shows how important it is to promote responsible use of food. Around eleven million tons of food waste are produced in Germany every year. Much of these waste comes from private households. The association actively contributes to the waste of resources and to promote cultural change in consciousness with regard to food rescue.

In addition to the direct distribution of foods on needs groups such as the Ronald McDonald House or the “Siegburg helps” association, the food savers have also set up their own food sharing station in their place of residence. Here, residents can independently pick up and share food. This practice not only promotes exchange within the community, but also ensures that less useful foods get into the trash.

The problem of food rescue is not only to be viewed locally. Many initiatives, such as the association "The bin remains empty" or various food sharing platforms, fight with similar challenges. In the country in particular, it is often difficult to find enough committed people who participate in food rescue. Nevertheless, the previous successes of the Siegburg initiative are an example of how commitment and creativity against the waste of food can be addressed.
