On Tuesday morning, a walker at the ferry pier in Cologne-Langel discovered the body of a man in the Rhine and immediately informed the police. This quickly became active and alarmed rescue workers from the water protection police and the fire brigade to recover the body.
According to a police spokeswoman, it is currently being examined whether the deceased is identical to the missing 36-year-old man who had gone into the water near the dance fountain on the last May day. According to reports, the man, who comes from Romania, wanted to swim from the Deutzer Rhine side to the left bank of the Rhine. Previously, he and three other men had bet who could reach the other bank as quickly as possible.Cologne: Witnesses saw how the man went down
Witnesses reported that the 36-year-old went down several times in the center of the Rhine, whereupon alarmed emergency services immediately initiated a search. Despite intensive efforts, which included both river and bank areas, the man initially disappeared. A helicopter supported the search from the air, but the success failed to do.
The criminal police have now started the investigation into the identity of the dead. It remains to be seen whether the deceased is actually the missing 36-year-old and what further information will come to light.
