Linke starts popular application against high rental prices

DIE LINKE in Baden-Württemberg has started a popular application to oblige the state government to take measures against rising rental prices. The party criticizes the government's previous measures as inadequate and demands an increased investment in social housing in order not to have the market determined by the living situation. The popular application includes five main demands on the state government: the reduction in apartment rents, the increase in the number of social housing, combating homelessness, preventing vacancy and promoting construction projects by a state -owned housing association.

Although the left is not represented in the state parliament, the government hopes to persuade the government to a specific draft law. In order to treat this application in the state parliament, the party needs around 40,000 certified signatures from supporters from Baden-Württemberg within one year. If this succeeds, the state government would be asked to work out and implement the corresponding law.

The party argues that the market alone is unable to regulate the living situation and that government interventions are necessary to ensure an appropriate and affordable living situation for all citizens. With the popular application, the left -wing is trying to put pressure on the government and to put the interests of the tenants at the center of the political discussion.
