On April 30, 2025, the Bundeswehr's new support command was launched with a solemn appeal in Bonn. This measure is part of a comprehensive reorganization of the Bundeswehr that reacts to the current security policy challenges. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Inspector General Carsten Breuer carried out the ceremony at the historic Hardthöhe, an important place in German defense policy.
The support command combines various areas, including the dispute base (SKB) and the medical service. This marks an important step in the implementation of the Osnabrück decree, with which the Bundeswehr is restructured in order to meet the requirements of state and alliance defense. Pistorius emphasized that this reorganization is a necessary answer to the changing threat situation and emphasized the importance of reducing interfaces and clearly define responsibilities.
A central goal of the new command is to guarantee the commitment of the Bundeswehr. Pistorius said that without the members of the support command "no tank rolls, no aircraft flies and no ship drives". Particularly noteworthy was the importance of the medical service, which ensures medical care at any time and at any location. This is crucial for the ability of the armed forces in crisis chances.
The new support area is led by lieutenant general Gerald Funke. The SKB and the central medical service merge into a new command, which is intended to strengthen the ability of the Bundeswehr to respond to a rapidly changing security policy conditions. In this way, more than 50,000 employees in the Bundeswehr are coordinated to provide the required skills.
By accommodating these resources in a single command, the defense capacity of the Bundeswehr is significantly optimized. Overall, the new structure ensures that Germany is well positioned for the challenges of the present and future. The support command thus sets a significant accent in preparation for potential missions to protect national and international security.
