Rhein-Sieg: Price explosion-Can customers still afford a cup of coffee?

The coffee prices have attracted a lot in the past year and a half and do not seem to find a hold. Schmitz-Mertens, a coffee roaster from Troisdorf, describes the situation as a result of various factors that are challenging for the industry. These factors include a combination of climatic conditions and market developments that lead to uncertainty in future delivery quantities.

A crucial event was the unfavorable weather conditions in Brazil, which includes intensive drought followed by a rainy period during the sensitive phase of coffee plant production. This has led to smaller beans, which made the markets in turmoil. The prices on the international stock exchanges show an alarming development. A price of about £ 160 per pound a year and a half ago has now risen to over 400 cents.

The changes in the trade conditions could also have an impact on pricing. The upcoming European Dewalization Act, which will only come into force in 2025, could tighten the import conditions for coffee and thus put additional pressure on prices. There are also signs that consumer behavior in countries such as China contributes to the price increase, since demand from urban, young population groups grows.

In Germany, consumers react to the exploding prices by adapting their purchase habits. Some customers tend to switch from branded products to cheaper discounter alternatives. Despite the previous price increases, some coffee roasters express the optimistic belief that customers can still afford coffee, although the situation may change soon.

The gastronomy also feels the pressure. Entrepreneurs like Peter Profittlich, who runs a traditional café in Bad Honnef, try not to pass the costs directly to the customers. The price for a cup of coffee in the café remains comparatively affordable. It is hoped that political measures such as a reduction in VAT help to compensate for increasing costs because the entire industry is under pressure.
