Cycling in Niederkassel: On the way to implementation or just election promise?

In the past four and a half years, the parties represented in the Niederkassel city council have formulated extensive traffic policy objectives that should focus on cycling. The General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) has now subjected this promise to a critical review in order to evaluate the progress of implementation. With the upcoming local elections, there is a re -evaluation and the ADFC will look back on the announcements made by the political actors.

According to Peter Lorscheid, the spokesman for the ADFC Niederkassel, the actual progress in bicycle traffic is insufficient. There are still disadvantaged traffic lights and an incomplete bicycle traffic network. Although different concepts were developed, the measures to improve cycling in the Region have remained behind the expectations.

Promise of the city council and inadequate implementation

In 2021, the city council voted across the group for the "Ferry-City-Bahnhof" concept to improve the cycle paths to the central nodes. However, the ADFC reports that only limited progress in the closure of gaps in the cycle path network was made, which continues to make mobility and connection for cyclists more difficult.

In addition, the expansion of a wheel commuter route between Bonn and Cologne was considered important, but there were no concrete implementations. Since the discussion about this route, more than ten years have passed and the ADFC emphasizes the urgency of a rapid solution.

Future view and skepticism

The upcoming local elections in September 2025 have the parties formulated again ambitious goals for bicycle traffic. However, while there is a lack of clear progress, Lorscheid shows skepticism about the actual implementation of these goals. The evaluation of the previous announcements and their differences to the realized infrastructure suggests that the future city council has to take significantly more initiatives in order to improve traffic conditions for cyclists in Niederkassel.
