Reverse on Bonnstrasse: Construction work and digital signal box moderation
Hürth: That is why the rail barriers are currently controlled by hand
in Hürth, the railway barriers at the transition to Bonnstrasse are currently in operation, which is due to ongoing construction work and the modernization of the relevant technology. These measures have led to significant traffic disruptions in recent weeks, with drivers complaining about long backlogs. Many affected residents publicly advised to avoid the affected route to avoid delays.
The construction work is part of the first construction level of the new electronic signal box "Left Rhein", which is to modernize the railway node in Cologne. As part of this project, the outdated signal box technology in Kalscheuren is replaced, which also includes a complete renewal of the barrier and signal technology at the transition to Bonnstrasse. In addition, the neighboring transition on Schmittenstraße and the small transition on the church tower are affected.
Automatic barriers are currently out of operation, while the new technology is not yet ready for use. In order to ensure security at this level crossing, Deutsche Bahn has used level crossing posts since mid -April that manually secure the tracks. These employees begin to secure the tracks ten to 15 minutes before the passage of a train, which leads to the backlogs mentioned.
However, the Situation has relaxed since May 2, since no trains will not run by May 19 due to the commissioning of the digital signal box between Hürth and Erftstadt. Nevertheless, road users must be prepared that construction vehicles are occasionally used on the tracks. After completing the work, the level crossing is expected to work normally again.
Progressing digitization in rail traffic aims to improve security and efficiency, but the transition from old technology to new technology temporarily brings with it challenges. It remains to be seen how the traffic situation in Hürth will develop after completing the construction work.
