With the death of Ruth Hieronymi, public service broadcasting in Germany mourns a significant personality. The former chairman of the WDR-Rundfunkat died in Bonn at the age of 77. Her death was announced on Saturday by the WDR, a loss that resulted in far -reaching reactions in the media landscape.
Hieronymi was a convinced advocate of the public service broadcast and headed the WDR supervisory committee from 2009 to 2016. Her political roots are in the CDU, where she worked as a member of the state parliament and vice parliamentary group leader from 1985 to 1999. She then represented Germany in the European Parliament for a whole decade, which underlines its extensive experience in political and media -related matters.
In her term as chairman, she created transparency and opened the meetings of the broadcasting council for the public. WDR director Katrin Viernau praised her tireless commitment and the further development of the body under her leadership. Rolf Zurbrüggen, the current WDR-Rundfunkrats chairman, emphasized: "With her we lose a passionate fighter for public service broadcasting in Germany."
