The number of abortions in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has reached an alarming maximum. According to the State Statistical Office, 23,445 demolitions of women with residence in North Rhine -Westphalia were reported last year. This has now passed for the third time in a row and represents the highest number since 2008 when departure was registered.

The increase in the number of dropouts raises questions about the underlying causes. It is particularly noteworthy that a large part of the women concerned, about 89.5 percent, was between 18 and 39 years old at the time of the intervention. This age group thus represents the predominant proportion of women who have made the decision to terminate pregnancy.

The current trend could be influenced by various social and health factors. In recent years, discussions about reproductive rights and access to medical care have gained importance. Likewise, awareness of family planning and sexualized information, as well as the availability of contraceptives, could have had an impact on the decision for or against pregnancy.
