Bad Honnef: Designed designer chairs did not dispose of 21,000 euros
The city of Bad Honnef was confronted with severe allegations after it became known that they were disposed of 42 designer chairs of the Santos model of the designer Edlef Bandixen from the chapel of the Rhöndorf forest cemetery. The chairs, which were supposed to have a total value of around 21,000 euros, were thrown into a garbage container, which led to an intensive public debate.
In a meeting of the city council, the city administration presented a table template on Thursday, in which it vehemently rejected the allegations. According to the city's own research, the realistic prices for used chairs of this model are between 43 and 69 euros each. Thus, the actual total value of the 42 chairs would rather be around 1,800 to 2,900 euros, far from the originally mentioned sum.
The city justified the disposal of the chairs with health concerns. An expert opinion had shown that the lower chapel of the forest cemetery was heavily burdened with mold. The city assumed that the chairs were also at risk due to the years of storage in the contaminated rooms. For this reason, the administration decided to remove the pieces of furniture for reasons of health protection.
Titian Rein, an architectural student and grandson of the chapel builder, Hans-Uwe in, had pointed out the public for the incident and spoke of a value of 500 euros per chair. This statement increases the impression that the chairs may have been worth more than claimed by the city. Mayor Otto Neuhoff calls the topic "exciting" and there have been several inquiries from press representatives on this topic, which indicates a persistent interest.
The Situation raises questions about dealing with historical and valuable pieces of furniture, especially in public institutions. It remains to be seen how the city of Bad Honnef will further develop its communication strategy on this matter and whether further measures are taken to clarify the citizens.
