Bonn | Power failure: How to prepare for it
Bonn (dpa/tmn) - In 2022, the average power failure per consumer in Germany was only 12.2 minutes. This value, published by the Federal Office for Population Protection and Disaster Aid (BBK), shows that power outages in Germany are generally rare. Nevertheless, it is advisable to prepare for a possible blackout, especially in view of experiences from past events, such as the power failure in the Münsterland in winter 2005.
A longer power failure can have a big impact on daily life. In addition to the interruption of electrical supply, water supply and heating could also be affected. For example, there is no possibility of flushing toilet or heating in winter. The use of mobile communications and landline telephony would also be restricted, since batteries and emergency power supply are not available indefinitely. Cash transactions are also affected because ATMs and cash register systems would no longer work in supermarkets.
Create emergency supply
In order to be able to make do without electricity, the BBK recommends creating an emergency supply. Such a supply should not only be useful for power failures, but also for other emergencies. A water supply of at least 1.5 liters per day and adult is recommended. In addition to water, it makes sense to buy durable foods that are easy to prepare, such as dry fruits, nuts, rusks and canned goods. Baby food should also be taken into account.
A camping stove with gas cartridge or a gas grill can be used for preparing food. However, it is urgently not advised to use gas -powered devices indoors, as this can lead to health dangers. In addition, alternative light sources such as camping lamps or crank -powered flashlights should be used to be able to orientate yourself in the dark.
communication and support in an emergency
It is important to get information about contact points in the municipality in advance, such as fire stations or town halls. These can offer support or information in an emergency. Furthermore, clear agreements should be made within the family in order to be able to communicate in emergency situations and support relatives in need. Meeting points should be defined to facilitate the search in the event of a failure.
precautionary measures after a power failure
A power failure usually ends at some point. Nevertheless, it is important to observe precautionary measures in order to avoid fire risk through uncontrolled operation of electrical devices. It is advisable to ensure that devices such as the stove and iron are switched off before restoring the power supply. So it is avoided that these devices suddenly go into operation when the electricity returns.
