Stuttgart Liederkranz celebrates 200th anniversary
On Sunday, April 21, the Stuttgart Liederkranz celebrates its 200th anniversary in the Liederhalle. The worship for Schiller and the connection to Stuttgart shape the event, which is reminiscent of the city's cultural roots. The Schiller enthusiasm of past years is compared to the adoration of today's pop and sports star in order to illustrate the importance of the poet and thinker for the city. The unveiling of his statue on Schillerplatz and the opening of the Schiller National Museum in Marbach once attracted thousands of visitors and testify to Stuttgart's sustainable connection to Schiller.
The Stuttgart Liederkranz, founded in May 1824, was closely connected to Schiller's work from the start. The financing of a first song hall in 1864 reflects the deep roots of the choir in city history. After the destruction of the building in World War II, the Liederkranz was followed by the initiative for the construction of today's Liederhalle. Despite challenges in the area of membership growth and the young commitment, the association has successfully continued its cultural work.
The Liederkranz is currently in the future by restructuring its choirs and creating new ensembles such as the SLKPlus and the Stuttgart Vokal Chamber Choir. The ceremony for the anniversary on April 21 in the Beethovensaal of the Liederhalle presents the variety of the ensembles of the Stuttgart Liederkranz and promises a varied evening with musical contributions and a lecture by the city historian Herbert Medek.
