Sudan War: Bonn calls for refugees

two years of war in Sudan: greatest displacement crisis of our time

The emergency in Sudan has accepted alarming dimensions over the past two years. According to the United Nations, the civil war has become one of the greatest displacement crises in modern history. The UNHCR reports that over 12.7 million people were sold from their homeland, with the majority - almost 8.6 million - escaping within the country. Many of them searched for refuge in neighboring countries such as the Chad, while they themselves have to deal with considerable economic and social challenges.

The entire situation is largely ignored in international perception, and the living conditions of the displaced people are catastrophic. Millions are confronted with hunger, violence and uncertainty. Reports of sexual violence against refugees are increasing and many affected people have fled several times, which also exacerbates their situation. Humanitarian aid suffers from significant lack of means, with only a third of the necessary funds made available for humanitarian measures in 2024.

In Egypt, the pension benefits for refugees have been severely restricted, while medical care is often inadequate in the Chad with a doctor for 25,000 people in some areas. Many Sudanese children who have fled to neighboring countries have no access to education, which will have long -term effects on their future. The UNHCR finds that international cohesion and financial support are urgently needed to cope with this crisis.

The UNHCR and other organizations strive to offer the refugees fundamental support, including accommodation, health care and sanitary services. They work with local governments and organizations to ensure special protection for vulnerable groups, including children and women. In many regions of Sudan and in neighboring countries, expanding and setting up refugee camps is of high priority to meet the most immediate needs.

The international community is asked to draw attention to this crisis and to provide the urgently needed financial resources. Without this support, the risks of further destabilization of the region are high, which affects not only the affected countries, but also the global community.
